Concrete Resurfacing

Spray-On Concrete in Port Stephens

Spray-on concrete — also called texture coating, spray-on overlay or decorative concrete coating — is the most common resurfacing method used across Port Stephens. It’s the technique behind the majority of driveway, pool surround and patio resurfacing jobs we do: a polymer-modified cementitious overlay, applied by spray to the existing concrete surface, creating a fresh, textured finish that’s sealed and coloured to suit the property.

The spray-on method is versatile, cost-effective, and — when done with the right products and preparation — produces results that last 10–15 years in coastal conditions.

How Spray-On Concrete Works

Spray-on concrete is a thin overlay system — typically 3–6mm thick — applied over an existing concrete substrate. It’s not the same as simply painting concrete: the overlay is a cementitious product that bonds chemically and mechanically to the existing slab, creating a new wearing surface rather than a surface coating.

The process:

  1. Surface preparation — cleaning, crack filling, grinding of any high spots or failed sections, bonding primer application
  2. First spray coat — the overlay material is mixed and applied by spray gun to the prepared surface, creating the base layer
  3. Aggregate texture — fine aggregate in the mix creates the natural, slip-resistant texture characteristic of spray-on concrete
  4. Second coat (where required) — for pool surrounds and high-traffic areas, a second coat adds thickness and consistency
  5. Sealing — a UV-stable topcoat sealer is applied in the selected colour and finish

Result: A fresh, uniform surface that covers old staining, roughness and minor surface damage, with a texture that provides grip and a colour that won’t fade quickly under coastal UV.

Products We Use

Product selection is the most critical factor in how a spray-on concrete job performs in Port Stephens’s coastal environment. Not all products are rated for coastal conditions — products that perform well inland can fail within 2–3 years under the combined pressure of salt air, UV and chlorine.

Dulux Avista

Dulux Avista is Australia’s leading spray-on concrete overlay system and the product most commonly specified by quality contractors for coastal applications. It’s a polymer-modified cementitious overlay with high UV resistance, tested to Australian coastal conditions, and available in a comprehensive range of standard and custom colours.

Avista’s formulation includes:

  • High UV inhibitors to resist coastal bleaching
  • Polymer modification for flexibility (important for surfaces subject to minor movement)
  • Fine aggregate for consistent, slip-resistant texture
  • Compatibility with a range of sealers appropriate for different exposure levels

We use Dulux Avista and equivalent high-performance systems as our standard for Port Stephens work.

Coastal-Grade Topcoat Sealers

The overlay is only as good as the sealer protecting it. We use UV-stable polyurethane and acrylic-polyurethane sealers with high UV inhibitor content, formulated for outdoor coastal Australian conditions. These are professional-grade products — not available in hardware stores — with significantly longer service lives than standard consumer sealers.

Colour Options

Spray-on concrete is available in a wide range of colours. The most popular choices for Port Stephens properties:

Coastal tones — light sand, off-white, cream, buff — reflect heat, don’t show salt residue as much, and complement the coastal aesthetic of most Port Stephens homes. Particularly popular for pool surrounds and patios where lighter colours are cooler underfoot.

Stone and earth tones — mid-grey, charcoal, sandstone — suit brick and render homes. Popular for driveways where a more neutral tone is preferred.

Bold choices — terracotta, heritage green, deeper greys — suit specific property styles and are available for clients wanting a stronger colour statement.

We bring physical colour samples to every quote. Colours can vary somewhat from samples due to application conditions and the existing slab colour — we’ll discuss realistic colour expectations at the quote.

Texture Options

The standard spray-on texture is a natural fine-aggregate finish — similar to fine sandpaper in feel, consistently non-slip, and appropriate for all surfaces.

Options:

  • Fine texture — smoother, closer to a sand finish, suits indoor-outdoor transition areas
  • Standard texture — the most common finish for driveways, patios and pool surrounds
  • Coarse texture — higher non-slip performance, suited to steep driveways or pool surround areas with significant splash

For stencil patterns overlaid with spray-on — the flagstone, cobblestone and slate looks — the texture coexists with the pattern, giving both visual interest and grip.

Longevity in Coastal Conditions

In Port Stephens, the lifespan of a spray-on overlay depends heavily on:

  • Product quality — premium coastal-rated products last significantly longer than entry-level products
  • Preparation quality — a properly prepared and primed surface is the foundation; poor prep is the #1 cause of premature failure
  • Location — Fingal Bay and Anna Bay’s extreme coastal exposure will see shorter service lives than Medowie or Raymond Terrace at similar quality levels
  • Maintenance — regular cleaning to remove salt accumulation, and periodic reseal at 5–8 years, extends the overlay’s life significantly

Typical lifespans for Port Stephens:

  • Premium product, correct prep, high coastal exposure (Fingal Bay, Anna Bay): 10–12 years before major refresh needed
  • Premium product, correct prep, moderate coastal exposure (Nelson Bay, Corlette): 12–15 years
  • Premium product, correct prep, inland (Medowie, Raymond Terrace): 15+ years

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between spray-on concrete and paint? Concrete paint sits on the surface as a thin film with minimal bond strength. Spray-on overlay is a cementitious product that chemically bonds to the concrete substrate — significantly thicker, stronger and more durable. Paint on concrete typically lasts 1–3 years before peeling; a properly applied spray-on overlay lasts 10–15 years.

Can spray-on concrete go over any surface? It bonds to concrete and masonry. It can go over previously sealed or coated concrete if the old coating is fully removed or appropriately prepared. It won’t bond to ceramic tile, pavers or timber directly. If you’re unsure whether your surface is suitable, send us a photo and we’ll assess.

Will spray-on concrete hide all the existing damage on my driveway? It will cover most surface-level damage — old sealer remnants, minor roughness, staining, surface pitting. Cracks need to be filled first (we do this as part of prep). Significant surface irregularities may telegraph through if not addressed. We inspect and prepare every surface before coating — if there’s anything that won’t be covered satisfactorily, we’ll tell you before we start.

Does Dulux Avista come with a warranty? Dulux Avista carries the manufacturer’s product warranty when applied by certified or trained applicators to the manufacturer’s specification. We apply product to manufacturer’s specification as standard, and our work also carries our own workmanship warranty.
