Concrete Resurfacing

Driveway Resurfacing in Port Stephens

The driveway is the first thing anyone sees when they arrive at your Port Stephens property. It’s also one of the surfaces that takes the hardest hit from the coastal environment — constant salt air exposure, intense UV, and vehicle traffic combine to degrade driveways faster here than in inland NSW locations.

Driveway resurfacing is the most cost-effective solution for driveways that have aged, faded, pitted or cracked. Rather than demolishing and replacing the existing concrete slab — a disruptive, expensive process — resurfacing applies a new surface system directly over the existing concrete, restoring or upgrading both appearance and protection.

We resurface driveways across all Port Stephens suburbs: from the extreme coastal exposure of Fingal Bay and Anna Bay to the milder inland conditions of Medowie and Raymond Terrace.

When Is Driveway Resurfacing the Right Call?

Good candidates for resurfacing:

  • Driveways with surface pitting, roughening or salt damage but a sound underlying slab
  • Driveways with UV-bleached or delaminating sealers
  • Driveways with minor surface cracking (hairline or minor settlement cracks)
  • Driveways with staining (oil, rust, algae) that you want to cover permanently
  • Driveways that are structurally fine but simply look old and tired
  • Driveways where you want to significantly upgrade the appearance (stencil or decorative overlay)

When replacement is needed instead:

  • Slabs with major structural cracks indicating ground movement or failure
  • Slabs that are significantly uneven or heaving
  • Very old concrete that has delaminated to the aggregate throughout (not just on the surface)

Driveway Resurfacing Methods

Basic Reseal

Best for: Driveways in good structural and surface condition with faded or worn sealer.

A reseal renews the surface protection without adding a significant thickness layer. We clean the surface thoroughly, address any minor defects, and apply a quality UV-stable sealer in a penetrating or film-forming formulation appropriate to the surface and environment.

Reseal is the most affordable option and the right call when the concrete itself is genuinely in good condition. It’s also the appropriate maintenance treatment for resurfaced driveways after 5–8 years.

Typical cost: $1,400–$2,500 for a single driveway

Spray-On Texture Overlay

Best for: Driveways with surface pitting, roughening, old sealer breakdown, or light cracking. The most common resurfacing method in Port Stephens.

A spray-on overlay adds a 3–6mm layer of cementitious coating to the existing surface, creating a fresh, uniform texture. The overlay covers minor defects and old sealer remnants, bonds to the existing concrete, and is sealed with a UV-stable topcoat. Colours are available in a range of options — from natural concrete tones to sandstone, charcoal, and heritage colours.

For coastal properties, we specify products with high UV inhibitor content and salt-resistant formulations. The most common product for Port Stephens work is Dulux Avista and equivalent high-performance coastal overlays.

Typical cost: $2,600–$4,500 for a single driveway

Decorative Stencil Overlay

Best for: Homeowners wanting a significant visual upgrade — the look of stone, slate or brick pavers without the cost of removal and relaying.

Stencil concrete involves laying a stencil pattern on the prepared surface before the overlay is applied. When the overlay is set and the stencil removed, the pattern is revealed — typically a grid or flagstone pattern that closely resembles pavers. A colour sealer or antique wash is applied to enhance depth and realism.

Stencil concrete is one of the most visually dramatic driveway transformations available, and it’s popular in Port Stephens for pre-sale preparation and for holiday homes wanting strong visual appeal in listing photos.

Typical cost: $5,400–$10,400 for a double driveway

The Importance of Surface Preparation

The preparation phase determines whether a resurfacing job lasts 15 years or fails in three.

For Port Stephens coastal driveways, preparation typically includes:

1. Surface cleaning — We use high-pressure washing to remove surface dirt, algae and loose material. Salt-affected surfaces may need a specialised cleaning agent to remove salt contamination before priming.

2. Oil stain treatment — Oil contamination is common on driveways and prevents primers from bonding. We use specific degreasers and treatments for oil-affected areas. Untreated oil spots are the #1 cause of resurfacing delamination.

3. Crack repair — Hairline and minor cracks are routed, filled and allowed to cure before the overlay goes down. This is not a cosmetic fix — it’s structural: the overlay needs a sound surface underneath or it will mirror any movement and crack again.

4. Edge grinding — Where the driveway meets paths, gutters or garden edges, we grind back to create a clean joint and allow the overlay to feather correctly.

5. Bonding primer — The right primer for the surface conditions is applied before any overlay. For coastal surfaces, we use primers rated for high-humidity and salt-affected environments. The primer is everything — without it, the overlay has nothing to bond to.

Coastal Products We Use

Not all concrete coatings are rated for coastal environments. Products that perform well in inland applications can degrade rapidly under Port Stephens conditions.

We use products specifically tested and rated for coastal Australian environments:

  • Dulux Avista — a premium texture coating system with high UV resistance and salt air rating, widely used for coastal applications across Australia
  • Penetrating sealers (silane/siloxane based) for driveways where a simple reseal is the right solution — these work from within the concrete rather than as a surface film, making them less vulnerable to salt working under the film
  • Polyurethane topcoats with high UV inhibitor content for overlay finishes in extreme coastal positions

Driveway Resurfacing Cost Guide

MethodTypical Range (single driveway)Typical Range (double driveway)
Basic reseal$1,400–$2,500$2,200–$4,000
Spray-on overlay$2,600–$4,500$4,200–$7,500
Decorative stencil$4,500–$7,500$5,400–$10,400

What moves the price:

  • Surface condition — heavily damaged surfaces need more prep work
  • Size — quoted by m², larger driveways cost more in total but less per m²
  • Product and finish — entry-level vs premium coastal-rated products
  • Colour and pattern — some stencil patterns and custom colours carry a premium
  • Location — properties at the far end of the peninsula (Fingal Bay, Anna Bay) have slight travel cost premium

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a resurfaced driveway last in Port Stephens? With quality products and correct preparation, a spray-on overlay lasts 10–15 years in a coastal environment. A basic reseal is typically 5–7 years before resealing is needed. The closer you are to the water, the more important product quality is to achieving the upper end of these timelines.

Can cracks be hidden by resurfacing? Minor surface cracks can be filled and resurfaced over — the new surface will be smooth and crack-free. Structural cracks that indicate ongoing slab movement cannot simply be covered — the overlay will mirror the crack when the slab moves. We assess cracks honestly: we’ll tell you if what we see is surface-level or structural.

Will the surface be slippery when wet? Spray-on texture overlays have a naturally non-slip texture from the aggregate in the coating. We can also add additional anti-slip aggregate to the sealer coat if you have a steep driveway where additional grip is needed. Smooth stencil surfaces can be less grippy — we discuss this at the quote stage.

How long until I can drive on the driveway after resurfacing? We recommend 24–48 hours before foot traffic and 72 hours before vehicle traffic. We’ll give you specific guidance based on weather conditions on the day.

Can you resurface an exposed aggregate driveway? Yes, though it requires additional prep. Exposed aggregate driveways have a rough, textured surface that needs to be cleaned and primed carefully before an overlay will bond correctly. The result is a smooth spray-on surface over the aggregate — the aggregate is encapsulated rather than visible. Some clients prefer this; others prefer to maintain the exposed aggregate look. We discuss the options.

Do I need to move my cars the night before? Yes. The driveway needs to be completely clear — cars, bins, pot plants, any other items — at least two hours before we start (the night before is easiest). It stays clear until the cure time is confirmed complete.
