Micro-Topping Concrete Floors: What Is It and Where Does It Work?

FAQs

Is micro-topping the same as polished concrete?

No. Polished concrete is ground and buffed from an existing concrete slab, it doesn’t add thickness, it reveals and refines the existing material. Micro-topping is an applied layer over the existing substrate. They produce a somewhat similar aesthetic but are entirely different processes. Polished concrete requires a concrete substrate with adequate quality and aggregate composition; micro-topping can be applied over tiles, screed, or any sound, prepared substrate.

Can micro-topping be applied over existing tiles without removing them?

Yes, this is one of its primary renovation advantages. Provided the tiles are firmly adhered (not hollow), the grout lines are filled flush, and the surface is properly primed, micro-topping can be applied directly over existing tiles. The 2-3 mm thickness bridges grout lines without telegraphing them. This avoids the cost and disruption of tile removal.
